They never get bored with this story and often choose it as our bedtime story selection. But, I admit it myself. This book is fun to read aloud and I don’t mind reading it over, and over again. The story is about a friendship between a gorilla and a very small kitten named Beauty. The gorilla is very special because he had been taught to use a sign language, so he was able to tell his keepers what he wanted. One day, he signed to his keepers that he wanted a friend. So, they give him a little kitten named Beauty and the two of them become close friend. This is a heart-warming tale about friendship and I enjoyed reading it to my children.

Story Time: Books We Read Last Week

Last week was very busy (as usual), but I managed to read three times to my children. I’ve been reading this book over and over again to my children during our story time. There are an opposite opinion between my eldest son and my daughter; my son like the little boy but my daughter prefers the tree. But both of them agreed that even though the story is sad but it’s a wonderful story and they love it very much. I hope my colleagues enjoy my speech, get the message from this book and spread the power of love and giving. ^_^

Story Time: Books We Read Last Week

Last week I'm not feeling well because my back in pain again. I'm off for three days and I spent most of my time with them. I didn't even have time to open my FB, which is fine with me. Basically, I play with them especially with the youngest one and bring them along with me to do the grocery shopping. Do I have time to read to them? Yes, of course I do. My children are in love with Tiny, Moonpie and Andre (the lovely cats in this book). They so excited when I show them this book and they asked me to read to them before dinner. And there was a part when she talks about the important to read to children, I agreed with her that reading to our children is a joyful activity. Yes, it is a joyful activity. This is the time when I can cuddle my children and feel close to them. And after reading together, I feel the satisfaction when I see their happy face. That meant they enjoy the stories. And last Thursday, since school holiday just around the corner, I let my children watch the movie and stay up a bit late. The story is hilarious and Jim Carrey was a great comedian. And the penguins are adorable. We laugh out loud and had a great time watching the movie. After watching the movie, I asked my children if we have picture book about penguins. They look for it and found Oliver Jeffers’s Lost and Found. So, I read to them that book. Lost and Found is a story about the friendship between a lonely penguin and a boy. How this boy tries to return the penguin to where it’s belong. He even set out a journey to the South Pole with the penguin. But after they get there, the boy discovers that the penguin wasn’t lost after all. Oliver Jeffers’ unique tale of friendship is such a delight read aloud book. I loved Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler (my children love them too). I collected most of their books and I bought this one from Big Bad Wolf sale the other day. In this book, it’s tells a story about Stick Man who lives in the family tree with his Stick lady and their stick children three. One day, a dog finds him and snatches him for a game of fetch. This is the beginning of a terrible journey which Stick Man tries to get back but is taken farther and farther away from his home. Will he ever get back to the family tree? You definitely have to read this book to find out. It’s really fun to read this book to my children (maybe because I loved repetitive rhymes) and also we enjoyed to see the familiar bright illustrations by Axel Scheffler. My children will explore the books and tries to find familiar character from The Gruffalo or Monkey Puzzle.

Shopping @ Bookxcess

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-7ErpU5PzbCA/ToR5ktwV_0I/AAAAAAAAAMU/lTgMvawBYQU/s320/230920111330.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5657780703548800834" />
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-HUf0JtpRDhs/ToR4xIGEYMI/AAAAAAAAAMM/R1bnxYuE45w/s320/240920111350.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5657779817266045122" />
Last Friday, I went to Bookxcess to buy birthday present for my friend. One of my favorite is Babar. I adored Babar and his elephant’s family. The Story of Babar first came out in year 1931. According to the author, Jean de Brunhoff, the story was inspired by a bedtime story created by his mother, Cecile de Brunhoff. And after he dies, his son Laurent continued the Babar’s legacy.This year, in conjunction with the 80th anniversary of Babar, the publisher will be publishing Laurent de Brunhoff's Babar's Celesteville Games. My children are very excited to experience the kampung environment again. I know my children schedule will be occupied with playing and exploring new things most of the time. But, I just bring along some picture books to read when we have spare time. The entire two weeks, I managed to reads twice to them during their bedtimes. The best thing is we are not alone. My brothers and my nephews join our bedtime’s stories. I have to reads several books requested by them. Luckily I bring along the Backyard Books series which have seven titles. This series introduce children to small and familiar animals such as butterfly, ants, dragonfly, spider and ladybug. My children and my nephew have to choose their favorite insects and I will read to them. But, they have to pretend to be the insect that they choose. But I say I can’t, because I have to work tomorrow. She’s understood and picks this one, Monkey Puzzle by Julia Donaldson. Actually, this book is one of our favorite before The Grufallo. I bought this book first and fell in love with Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler. It’s tells a story about a little monkey who lost his mum. The kindhearted butterfly tries to help him to find her. But the butterfly misunderstands monkey's descriptions of his mum and leads them to all sorts of unsuitable animals; bat, elephant, spider, snake and so on. It is very funny and clever story which will make our children giggles and definitely ask for more.

Picture Book of the Day: Quiet! A new book with seven original stories by Dr Seuss (originally published in magazines) will be published for the first time in book form on September 27. It called, The Bippolo Seed and Other Lost Stories. I can’t wait to get hold of this book. I am a big fan of Dr Seuss (My children too!). We collected most of his books. Our favorite is Fox in Socks, One Fish Two Fish, Green Eggs and Ham, and of course The Cat in the Hat.

Picture Book of the Day: No, David! It’s a ritual in Kinokuniya and every staff will get their chance, once in three month. It’s been so long I haven’t do story telling, so I decide to do it today. I choose Patrick McDonnell’s The Gift of Nothing, a heartwarming story about friendship. It’s a story about Mooch the cat, who wanted to give his best friend a gift. But the problem is his best friend Earl the Dog, has everything. What do you get someone who had everything? Nothing! So, he begins his quest to search for the gift of nothing. My daughter wakes me up at 1 am, just to ask me to read to her. I was angry at the beginning but then I know if I didn’t fulfill her request, she will not go to bed. She already chosen what book to read and before I start my son came and joins us for the bedtime stories. At first, I read to them Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. The second story was Little Red Riding Hood. I thought, we going to end the session after the second story, but my son begged me to read Goldilocks and the Three Bears. Oh well, I cannot disappointed them. Besides, I loved to read to them. So, I read to them and end up we sleep at 2 am. As usual, Sofea will choose her princess books and Anwar will choose his train and bugs books. I still haven’t figured out why Sofea so attached with all this princess-thingy especially Disney Princess and Barbie. She will fight with her brother if he claimed that all her book ‘mengarut’/nonsense. She will say all her brother’s books are ‘mengarut’ too. Even during our bedtime stories, they will quarrel and claim that their book is the best one. I have to explain to them why we need to read both fiction and non fiction. Even though Sofea is only 4 years old, but I have to control her obsession with all this princess-thingy before it’s become worst. Yes, I want her to be a reader but not a reader who only read all this princess-thingy books. So, one of my missions is to make sure she like to reads all kind of book include her brother bugs book. ^_^

Books Read: Diagnosis: Dispatches from the Frontlines of Medical Mysteries

My youngest son was diagnosed with VSD-in-failure last year, so we spent almost five month in hospital. Many new things I’ve learned there (good and bad) and I’ve meets all kind of people (doctors, nurses and patients). I really into this medical thingy and that one of the reason I bought this book. In this book, Dr Lisa Sanders exposed us the process of diagnosis, how the doctors and expertise tackle diagnostic dilemmas and dramatic stories of patients with mysterious symptoms. I enjoyed the chapter where doctors make wrong decision, leads to diagnostic errors and how they overcome it. I highly recommend this book to be read by doctors and future doctors so they can prepare themselves the real life at hospital. As for us, it’s a MUST read because we never know that some day we will be a patients and we have to tell a complete story to the doctor to avoid misdiagnosis. Here is some of my favorite quotes from this book.
Doctors are human beings and, thus are prone to biases, distortions of perspective and blind spots. But doctors have the capacity to learn from their mistakes, overcome built-in biases, and guard against the kinds of thinking errors that in other professions might be an annoyance. (Page 271)
“There’s no shame in intubating the esophagus”, he said. But there is shame in not checking or catching the error. Errors themselves are unavoidable. Mistakes will always happen – all types of mistakes, from the technical to the cognitive. But that doesn’t mean we throw up our hands in helplessness. The key is designing our systems, our procedures, our protocols and our own thinking process to minimize mistakes as much as possible and then to catch mistakes when they are made.(page 272)

Books Read to My Children: Eloise Wilkin's Poems To Read To the Very Young

I ordered this book few months ago after I bought Eloise Wilkin’s Stories. How I adore Eloise Wilkin’s illustration. Her illustration excited me to read the poems to my children. This book featured over 30 poems of childhood by famous poets such as Robert Louis Stevenson, Christina Rossetti, Kate Greenway, Langston Hughes and many more. My favorite poems are Time to Rise by Robert Louis Stevenson. A birdie with a yellow bill/ Hopped upon the window sill/ Cocked his shining eye and said: / “Aint’ you shamed, you sleepy-head! /

Calla Edition of Grimm’s Fairy Tales

One of the advantage working in bookstore is we got a chance to browse the new book before we displays it on the bookshelf. Yesterday, we received Calla Edition of Grimm’s Fairy Tales. The book is gorgeous. Not only having the attractive cover, inside of the book is mesmerizing. There are 40 full-color plates and innumerable black-and-white spot elements which illustrated by Arthur Rackham. After browsing this book, I want to get one for myself. So, come over and take a look what this book has to offer. For toys, Anwar bought one of his favorite Thomas train collection and Sofea bought Barbie sun-glasses and watch. And for books, Anwar want to add his Backyard Books collection. So I bought, Are You a Bee? for him. But when I purchased the Eloise Wilkin Stories published by them, I fall in love with this publisher and started to collect their books especially a Little Golden Book Collection. Golden Books has changed the publishing history when they launched Little Golden Books in 1942 at 25 cents each. For the first time, children books were high quality and low-priced. They were available to almost all children and affordable for most families, American families in particular. To date, over 2 billion Little Golden Books have been printed and sold all over the world. Last week I bought Friendly Tales by Margaret Wise Brown; there are twenty stories and poems in it. I enjoyed reading it to my children and they love them too. Some of our favorite stories are Pussy Willow, The Train to Timbuctoo, The Color Kittens, Home for Bunny and Mister Dog. I highly recommend this wonderful book!

The Usborne Reading Programme

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 216px; height: 320px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_AdY3v5RWskk/THkeTcgZNyI/AAAAAAAAAFs/WtsUur3lFac/s320/three_wishes.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5510468938482923298" /><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 216px; height: 320px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_AdY3v5RWskk/THkeLAH_KbI/AAAAAAAAAFk/FHpQhh7nYIk/s320/fr_the_ant_and_the_grasshopper.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5510468793425406386" />
Next year Anwar, my eldest son will be in standard one. I’m a bit worried because he cannot read yet. He can spell the words but don’t know how to pronounce them. I tried the Ladybird Keyword series but don’t help much. My children don’t really like the classic-look of the book (remember Peter and Jane). So, I try out the Usborne Reading Programme series. It’s divided into four levels according to the words per book; Level One – up to 150 words per book, Level Two – up to 250 words per book, Level Three – up to 450 words per book and Level Four – up to 750 words per book. So, I bought two titles from the First Level, The Three Wishes and The Ant and the Grasshopper. My children seem to enjoy the books especially Anwar and he even try to read it by himself.With delightful illustrations and easy-to-read text, these series is very good for beginner reader like my children. Thanks to Iza who introduced her books to me. Now I'm starting to collect all her books and what thrills me more is that there's going to be a reprint edition of Gyo Fujukawa's A to Z in September (ISBN:9781402768187). Gyo Fujikawa was an American illustrator and children's book author. She wrote more than 50 books and her books are regularly in reprint. Her paintings of children are recognizable for their happy faces, rosy cheeks and simple dots for eyes. Her most popular book is Babies and Baby Animals. I bought a copy of Baby Animals recently and started reading it to my children. They really loved it. Every time I read to them, they will giggle and ask me to re-read again.

A Mother Reading To Her Child

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 224px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_AdY3v5RWskk/TE2bEj9BklI/AAAAAAAAAFE/iEeI-rrby1Y/s320/alice-in-wonderland.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5498221222762222162" /> This painting called Alice In Wonderland, by George Dunlop Leslie. Normally, the paperback versions are only available a year after the hardcover release, but this time it was released earlier. I think it's a wise decision from the publishers, to remind us to get back to our books after a quiet month due to the football hype. This book will be available in all bookstores and in Kinokuniya customers can enjoy 20% off with purchase of other items.
